No, it's because of the fans.
Nowadays, words like "hetaboo" and "hetafags" are what most people associate with the Hetalia fandom. "Why is this?" You may ask. Well, Hetalia fans (or "Hetalians") were not as decent as they once were.

Hetalia vs Cleverbot: America
User: What's up dude!? It's me! America! The hero!
Cleverbot: The hero?
User: Yes, the hero! I'm the hero!
Cleverbot: I'm so feminist.

Cleverbot: No, I said I want to be female.
User: You're confusing me.
Cleverbot: I asked if you think I am a zombie.

let her fight for the plight of poorer folk
because Robin isn’t just a boy’s name.
Let your daughter be a princess
locked in a tower so high
let her be her own prince,
don’t tell her to wait for a hundred years,
let her swing from her own hair
and grasp her own fre
